Signs It’s Time to Have Your Water Tested

Whether you need water for bathing, cooking, drinking or cleaning, having the purest water possible is a necessity. Water goes through a treatment process to remove chemicals and pollutants, but on occasion, your water quality could still be compromised.

Contaminated water isn’t always obvious, though there are a few subtle signs that it may be time to have your water tested.

Odors in Your Water

Strange smells are one of the first signs of water contamination. Pay attention to the following odors:

  • Rotten eggs: A rotten egg smell comes from sulfur deposits. It’s not hazardous to your health, but it does compromise the taste of your water.
  • Chlorine: Some chlorine is present in your water, but a strong chlorine smell can indicate that the levels are too high.
  • Gas: A petroleum odor in your water is unusual, but it’s definitely a cause for alarm. This odor could mean that there are traces of gasoline or petroleum in your water that can be hazardous to your health.
  • Mold or grass: A moldy or grassy smell in your water could indicate an overgrowth of bacteria. This may not present a health concern, but it’s still best to have your water tested and treated to be sure.

Odd Taste

The mineral deposits in your water give it a distinctive taste, but there are a few unusual tastes to watch out for:

  • Salty taste: If your water tastes salty, the sodium content is too high. This isn’t immediately harmful, but it can cause health problems over time, and it makes your tap water unpleasant to drink.
  • Metallic taste: High iron, copper, manganese, zinc or lead content can give your water a metallic taste. This issue speaks more to water quality and taste than health concerns, but treatment is still recommended.

Other Signs of Poor Water Quality

Aside from the obvious smell and taste issues, there are a few other indicators of poor water quality, such as:

  • Stains: Orange or brown stains on your fixtures or appliances can indicate that there’s a high iron content in your water.
  • Soap scum and mineral buildup: Soap scum and mineral buildup in your shower and tub are signs of hard water. The mineral deposits in hard water leave residue behind and make cleaning more difficult, which can also affect your laundry and the performance of your appliances. Hard water isn’t dangerous, but it can be corrected easily with various water treatments.
