The Evolution of Water Filtration Systems

People have been trying to clean their water supply for thousands of years, making the evolution of water filtration systems throughout history an interesting topic to explore. Even before the acceptance of scientifically proven contaminants, humans have always known that some water is better than others. Especially in the ancient world, when diseases were rampant, clean water was a sign of health and prosperity, and in a lot of ways, that is still the case today.

To understand the importance of investing in a good water filtration system, you should know the history behind it.

The Ancient World

In ancient Indian and Egyptian societies, access to clean water was of particular importance, and there are many documents that have been recovered from the era that detail ways by which to keep the water supply pure. Often, this meant boiling the water or letting it sit in the hot sun. Alternative methods included running water through sand or gravel. These instructions date back almost 3,500 years.

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates worked a lot with water in his lifetime almost 2,500 years ago. Starting with his Theory of the Four Humors, Hippocrates believed that clean water was essential to maintaining balance among the Humors. His theories eventually led to the creation of the Hippocratic sleeve, an early cloth water filter through which boiled water could be poured to remove impurities.

Other ancient Greeks created alternative water filtration systems that gained acceptance during the time. One popular method was to use macerated laurel to clean rainwater, while another approach immersed bags of barley into a given water supply.

Modern History

Sir Francis Bacon is one of the earliest modern scientists to experiment with potential water filtration systems. His work became monumental in the eventual invention of the desalination process that removes salt from saltwater. By the 1800s, the city of London had instituted regulatory practices governing the municipal water supply and the water filtration systems of the day, eventually leading to the regulation of water supplies throughout Europe. As an interesting tidbit, the United States did not adopt federal water regulation standards until the 1940s.

Water Treatment Today

With the technological boom of the last several decades, in addition to increased oversight from world governments, water filtration systems today are more advanced than ever. It is now only a matter of time before the rest of the developing world catches up and clean drinking water becomes available across the planet.
