5 Misconceptions about Water Filters

More and more, people are turning to water filters to clean, purify and make the water they drink healthier. We live in a world that’s becoming more environmentally aware every day, and with this comes a rising awareness of the impurities and additives that can make our water unsafe to drink.

And yet, even with this rising awareness, certain myths and misconceptions still exist that stop people from adopting these useful features. Read five misconceptions regarding water filters, the truth behind them, and how you can get a great water filter for your home supply.

Water Filters Are Expensive

This is probably the most common of the misconceptions about water filters, that you can’t afford them because they’re so costly. Certainly, there are expensive versions out there, but there are also very effective water filters that can treat your whole house for an economical price that won’t break the bank. That doesn’t even take into account the energy bill savings you’ll reap from installing a treatment system in your home.

Water Filters Are Hard to Maintain

People think water filters require tons of constant maintenance and expert servicing. This, quite simply, isn’t true. You may have to change the filter cartridge twice a year, but that’s no worse than changing the air filter in your furnace. In fact, you can just do it at the same time and get into the habit.

Installation Requires an Expert

Once again, at the higher end of the spectrum there are complex systems that often have to be done by an expert, but this usually applies only to big commercial systems. In home water filtration systems can often be installed by a talented DIY-er. Of course, a good service will be happy to quote you a price that includes professional installation to save you the time and effort, and it still won’t cost a ton.

It’s Just Cheaper to Buy Bottled

This is one of the more staggering myths out there. Bottled water, quite simply, costs a fortune in the long run. Bottled water costs a great deal more than tap water, even when you consider the cost of installing your water filtration system. Also consider the cost to the environment with all of the plastic you’re contributing to landfills when you buy bottled.

It’s the Same as a Softener

Water filtration systems are not the same as water softeners. Water softeners simply remove hard metals and soften hard water. When it comes to chemical contaminants like chlorine, a water softener won’t do anything. Of course, the best systems can both soften and filter your water, and once again, the cost is not severe.
